Introduction
The Ji'an Main Canal's primary diversion gate draws water from the Mugua River. Initially constructed during the Japanese colonial period to irrigate farmland around immigrant villages, it was then known as "Yoshino Canal." The water diversion project, completed in late 1913, originally irrigated an area of about 955 hectares. Following Taiwan's retrocession, the canal was expanded to utilize tailwater from the Taipower Chuying Power Plant, extending irrigation to Ji'an Township and Hualien City, and covering over 2,500 hectares. In 2004, aligning with the "New Agriculture Plan for the 21st Century," the water diversion routes were improved to integrate production, ecological, and daily life functions (commonly referred to as the "three-living functions"). The routes were constructed using masonry stones, and lush greenery now flourishes along the waterway, supporting wildlife such as birds and fireflies. The vibrant ecosystem includes fish and shrimp. The canal connects to the Chuying Bicycle Path, making it a unique and refreshing spot for forest bathing.
