Introduction
The original Dijia Canal intake featured a tunnel-type irrigation route. Due to its age, landslides from upstream of the Fengping River would block the canal during heavy rains. This issue became more pronounced in recent years as irrigation demand increased due to expanded farmland in Sanmin, Yuli Township. However, the water intake capacity did not increase correspondingly, leading to water shortages for crops. To address this issue, the Hualien Management Office implemented policies to expand the irrigated area. This initiative involved constructing a new intake and water diversion channel for the Dijia Canal.
After the completion of the new construction project in 2023, the first main line of Dijia Canal can now provide stable irrigation water to the existing irrigated area, while the second main line supplies irrigation water to new areas, increasing the total irrigated area in Sanmin to 526 hectares (from the original 345 hectares plus an additional 181 hectares).
