The Beipu Canal draws its irrigation water from the Sanzhan River, located in Jingmei Village, Xiulin Township, Hualien County. The water source is near the Sanzhan Tribe, known as "Pratan" in the Taroko language. This name derives from the forest ghost flower found in the area when the Taroko people migrated here from Nantou. The canal's construction began during the Japanese colonial period but was completed after Taiwan's retrocession, with support from U.S. assistance programs.
